Whether we're designing new exhibits and buildings or doing preventative maintenance work, energy conservation is a primary concern at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo.

• Energy-wise maintenance practices—We use energy-efficient light bulbs and fixtures, change and clean HVAC filters regularly, and maintain and lubricate motors and controls properly.
• Efficient design principles—Emphasizing minimal disruption and maximum preservation of the natural environment, the Zoo's new exhibits and buildings are designed for the most efficient energy use for heating, cooling, lighting and water use.
• Low-pollution mowers—The Zoo is experimenting with the use of push mowers that use no gas. We began making this switch when we discovered that running a mower for one hour produces the same amount of pollution as driving a car 350 miles!
