Animals & Keepers Show their Stuff.

Don't miss some great opportunities to learn more about the animals and what we do at the Zoo. Some animal happenings occur during the summer months only. To ensure that the activity you're interested in will happen the day of your visit, call 719.633.9925, ext. 111, or e-mail info@cmzoo.org. Also, remember to check the Animal Happenings signs in each area during your visit for the most up to date information.

Keeper Talks and Demos

Listed in order by time of day; earliest to latest.

Giraffe Stampede

When: Daily, 9:15 a.m. (weather permitting)
Where: ARV Boardwalk, giraffe drawbridge
What: Start the day out right by watching our magnificent herd migrate to their exhibit.

Rhinoceros Training Demonstration

When: Daily, 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
Where: Wilgruem Elephant Center
What: Visit the WEC for an opportunity to see our newest addition getting acclimated to his new exhibits and training with the keepers.

Monkeys on the Move

When: Daily, 10:30 a.m. (weather permitting)
Where: Monkey Pavilion
What: Get a unique look at either our Goeffory’s Marmosets or Goeldi’s Monkeys. Each morning check out some of the smallest primates in the zoo as they make their way on an overhead tree branch highway to and from their outdoor exhibit.

African Rift Valley Animal Meet and Greets

When: Daily, 11:30 a.m. (weather permitting)
Where: African Rift Valley
What: Meet and learn about some of ARV’s smaller residents. Check the dry erase board by the Baobab Tree each day for the animals being highlighted.

Encounter Africa Keepers Caring for Elephants

When: Daily, 11:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
Where: Elephant Demonstration Yard (weather permitting)
What: Have you ever wondered what it takes to care for an elephant herd? Join our keeper staff as they give our girls a bath, pedicures, and exercise.

Hippo Training Demonstration and Keeper Talk

When: Daily, 2:00 p.m.
Where: Aquatics building, at hippos
What: How wide can a hippo open its mouth? What is a hippos closest relative? Find out the answers and see keepers interact with our Nile Hippos.

Giraffe Training Demonstration

When: Daily, 2:00 p.m.
Where: African Rift Valley Boardwalk or In the Giraffe Building (see sign post)
What: Have you heard about our herd? Cheyenne Mountain Zoo has one of the largest giraffe herds in captivity, and we can't wait to tell you all about them! Stop by so our giraffe can show you their training in action, and learn about how these gentle giants are helping to save their wild counterparts.

Gator Keeper Talk

When: Daily, 2:45 p.m. -Starts Memorial Day Weekend, May 26th
Where: Gator pond, at the entrance to Australia
What: Come meet some of the largest reptiles at the zoo. Learn about this crocodile cousin and maybe see them get an afternoon snack.

Pony Training Demo and Keeper Talk

When: Daily, 2:15 p.m. (weather permitting)
Where: Pony Ride area, at the entrance to Rocky Mountain Wild
What: Our Pony herd has joined together with our Animal Care Staff to remind us how smart our hoofed friends can be. Visit with some of our resident ponies as they take a moment to greet their fans. You may catch some fun training or one of our “Pony Picassos” creating a masterpiece.

Amur Leopard Enrichment or Training Demonstration

When: Daily, 2:20 p.m. (weather permitting)
Where: Amur Leopard Exhibit
What: Our Animal Care Staff works hard to keep our cats active and thinking. Come watch the leopards interact with our staff or some fun enrichment items.

Where: The Bear Grotto exhibits near Monkey Pavilion

ARV Animal Experience

What: Meet one of our charismatic African Species up close. Join the trainers in discovering something new about our wild friends ranging from the cockroach to zebra. Who knows what you will find?

Tiger Demo and Keeper Talk

When: Monday - Friday, 3:00 p.m. (weather permitting)
Where: Asian Highlands, at tigers
What: Learn how and why our Animal Care Staff train and enrich our Tigers. Catch a tiger training session or watch them play with a new enrichment item.

Orangutan Painting Demo

When: Fridays, 3:00 p.m.
Where: Primate World, at orangutans
What: Our Animal Care Staff do lots of activities with the Orangutans to keep their minds active. Koi Feeding and Talk

When: Daily, 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
Where: My Big Backyard
What: Help our feed our beautiful Koi and learn more about the biggest fish at the zoo.

Penguin Feeding and Talk

When: Daily, 11:00 a.m.
Where: Aquatics building; in front of the penguin exhibit
What: Watch our flock get their mid-morning snack. After the feeding our Animal Care Staff will be available to answer all your questions on the best dressed birds at the zoo.

Wolf Feeding and Keeper Talk

When: Daily, 11:30 a.m. (weather permitting)
Where: Rocky Mountain Wild, at Wolf Woods
What: Catch a glimpse of the elusive Mexican grey wolf. This feeding is a great time to see one of the rarest animals in North America.

Moose Feeding and Keeper Talk

What: Let us introduce you to “Tahoma”, our resident moose. Join our Animal Care Staff to learn about the largest member of the deer family.

Otter Feeding

When: Sunday - Tuesday, 1:30 p.m.
Where: Rocky Mountain Wild, at otters
What: Our aquatic acrobats will amaze you as they look for an underwater mid-morning snack. Animal Care Staff will be on hand to share just how outstanding otters are.

Grizzly Bear Enrichment Feeding

When: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2:45 p.m.
Where: Rocky Mountain Wild, on the boardwalk above bear side yard
What: Stop by on Tuesdays and Thursdays see Emmett and Digger playing with enrichment made to bring out the best in our bears.

Natural Behavior Animal Shows

Loft Show

When: Daily, Every hour on the half hour between 10:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
Where: Rocky Mountain Wild, the Loft on the west side of The Lodge at Moose Lake
Message: How does a Raven build her nest?  Can an opossum really balance on something as thin as a rope?  Are Barn Owls really silent when they fly?  Stop by the Loft and see if you can find the answers to these questions and more.

Orangutans are Awesome!

Where: Primate World orangutan exhibit
Message: Have you ever thought about why orangutans have such huge hands? Come see just how "handy" they are as our orangutans share how some of their cool adaptations help them live in the rainforest. Find out how you can help make sure orangutans are around for years to come by learning about palm oil and how it affects their habitat. We think that by the end of the show you'll agree that orangutans are awesome!

Bear Necessities: Grizzly Bear Show

When: Monday, Wednesday, Friday-Sunday, 2:45 p.m.
Where: Rocky Mountain Wild, in Grizzly Bear viewing area
What: What are the “bear necessities” for living like a wild grizzly? Emmett and Digger invite you to come by and see what natural behaviors make bears so perfectly adapted for living in their rugged mountain homes. From climbing to fishing, you’ve never seen the bears quite like this. You may even catch some training that allows us to take better care of the bears in their home here at the zoo. Amur Tiger Show

When: Saturdays and Sundays, 3:00 p.m. (weather permitting)
Where: Asian Highlands, tiger exhibit
What: Amur Tigers are the largest cat in the world and have the abilities to match. Catch a glimpse of one of the world’s most endangered animals and see how fast they can run, how they use their claws and even how well they can swim. Learn about how they use these amazing adaptations to survive in the wild and the crucial role they play in their natural habitat.

Guest Feeding & Up-Close Experiences

No need to make reservations for these unique feeding experiences at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. Get up close with long-time favorites and some new additions on your next visit.

Budgie Buddies Feeding Experience
Location: Australia
More fun than you can shake a seed stick at! Seasonally, you can take a summer stroll through our indoor aviary surrounded by more than 100 free-flight Australian birds - budgies, finches, cockatiels, rosella, and princess parrots. Purchase a seed stick for $1, and a bird or two may even land on your arm or shoulder. The aviary is open daily 10am-4pm, with certain winter restrictions unless otherwise noted.

Chicken Feeding Experience

Location: between Aquatics and Primate World
Join in on one of the hottest urban farming trends – raising chickens! In the coop behind Aquatics with some of the rarest and most exotic chicken varieties, including silver penciled wyandottes, silver leghorns, and cochins. Stop by between 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. daily to meet the flock. If you have an extra cluck (buck, that is) and you aren’t chicken, you can even feed them!


 

Giraffe Feeding Experience
Location: African Rift Valley
It’s a Cheyenne Mountain Zoo favorite 365 days a year! Hand-feed our 20 giraffe, the largest reticulated giraffe herd of any zoo in the world, for just $2.Reticulated what? We’re talking about the type of sub-species of our herd. The scientific name, Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata, means camel-leopard-like one who walks swiftly. Pony Rides
Location: Entrance to Rocky Mountain Wild
Hey cowpokes! Hop up in the saddle and take Old Paint for a ride at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. We have a mess of trusty steeds in all sizes and colors for the young'uns. Each pony and rider is individually led by a wrangler around a circular trail, nestled in Rocky Mountain Wild, just south of The Lodge at Moose Lake. It's an old west adventure they'll never forget.
